Pardon the little mess in the men’s department at Reed’s in downtown Tupelo.
The 108-year-old Reed’s, Tupelo’s oldest family-owned store, is doing some renovation work on the first floor, with new carpet, paint, decorations, lighting, fixtures and other improvements on tap.
The photo you see is where work is going on in the shoe department. Those columns, along with the rest of them in the store, will be painted a light gray. The carpeting is new. The checkerboard tiles will stay.
The store’s last major renovation was when Ronald Reagan was serving his second term as President, in 1985.
Lucia Randle, the store’s marketing director, said old photographs of downtown Tupelo will adorn the walls as well.
The store will retain its character, but the look will be updated to better suit the 21st century, she said. The work is expected to take several weeks.
