What's on Your iPod? 3/17

Tell me, Scene loves, what's on your iPod?

My latest additions include tunes by Kelly Clarkson, Justin Townes Earle and The Dead Weather.

My favorite of those three is probably the latest album by Earle, called "Midnight at the Movies." I loved his first album, "The Good Life," and I think his newest CD is even better than his first. I'm especially in love with the music in the title track, as well as songs like "Halfway to Jackson," "They Killed John Henry" and "Black Eyed Suzy." Check out his music if you love old-time, traditional country.

I can't find a video for any tunes off his latest album, so here's a video for his single "The Good Life" off his first album of the same name. Enjoy!

I also bought Kelly Clarkson's new album, "All I Ever Wanted." I was one of the few folks who loved her last album, but I can't say I'm disappointed with this new CD. I'm a sucker for a good pop song, and sweet ceiling cat, this album is _full_ of good pop songs.

I'm still not crazy about her first single, "My Life Would Suck Without You" – I think her follow-up single, "I Do Not Hook Up," is a million times better.

Pick this album up if you're in the mood for fun, summery rock-pop.

I also downloaded the two new tracks from Jack White's new supergroup, The Dead Weather. The band features The Kills' Alison Mosshart. Jack White's music and Alison's uh-mazing vocals? It's so good, I don't think I can form words.

What's new on your iPod? Share, share!

Kelly Clarkson is a good choice. I'm listening to a lot of Kenny Chesney myself. Wish he would come back to the Arena in Tupelo.

Happy St. Patrick's Day, Scene cats!

What are you doing to celebrate the day? I have to admit I'm not the biggest St. Patty's fan, but I'm rocking the green eyeshadow. I suppose it's the least I could do. :)

News!

* Got a couple thousand dollars lying around? Spend it all at this Elvis memorabilia auction.

* Coldplay is going on tour, with dates in Birmingham and Atlanta.

* Jennifer Hudson is planning her first full-scale tour.

* A biopic about John Lennon's teen years is in the works.

* Because Green Day loves us all, the band is releasing its entire catalog on vinyl.

* Kanye West will guest star on the upcoming "Family Guy" spinoff show.

* "Transformers 3" will hit the big screen in 2011.

* Here's an interesting story about how movie ticket and concession prices are higher than ever.

* Don't forget to vote for ACM's Entertainer of the Year award.

Merry Monday, my loves!

How was your weekend? Mine was busy – I worked all weekend, with just a tiny bit of off time in between. I managed to catch this week's movie, "The Last House on the Left," last night – but you'll hear more about that on Wizard 106 Tuesday at 8:45-ish a.m.

News!

* R.I.P., Ron Silver.

* Kid Rock is working on a new CD.

* This week is Grand Ole Opry week on "Idol," complete with performances from Randy Travis, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood.

* The SciFi channel is changing its name...sort of.

* Nelly Furtado has started her own indie label.

* And the remakes continue – the 1943 film "I Walked with a Zombie" will be remade.

* All Virgin Megastores will be closed by June.

* "Race to Witch Mountain" wins the top spot at the box office this weekend.

BY TODD HUNT

Winter Jam 2009 is now in our rearview mirror. Once again we had to turn away several hundred fans due to a lack of space. I was impressed by the die hard fans who were actually at the venue at 8:30AM Sunday morning when I came into work. I hope that they were able to find seats close to the stage! I was also glad that the weather was pleasant, allowing many fans the chance to enjoy themselves as they waited for the doors to open. Hope to see all of you again next year.

The success of Winter Jam leads me to ask the question: could a similar show work in the rock or country realm? What if three or four rock or country acts performed for a $10 ticket? Would you guys support something like that? From a venue standpoint we would love to see more shows where we have the enviable problem of having to turn people away due to a lack of seats. Maybe we can put a show like that together for the summertime to test the theory.

The song of the week is “You Really Got Me” by the Kinks or Van Halen (depending on your age!). The song was written by the Kinks in the sixties and was covered by Van Halen on their debut album. My iPod decided to play both versions this week while shuffling through my music library. That’s sign enough for me to include it as a song of the week!

Next week we’ll be hosting the Harlem Globetrotters on Monday night. Does anyone think that the Washington Generals have a chance at winning the game? I didn’t think so…

Until next time,

Todd

I'm definitely all about a rock/country show like that! That would be wonderful. I don't know why that wouldn't sell out.

I also like the idea of doing that with local bands. Get a huge amount of Northeast Mississippi bands to fill the Arena stage...it would be so cool!

Show & Tell - 3/12

In this Scene Now feature, we'll discuss what pop culture-y goodness has rocked your world this week.

I can't just pick one thing that I loved this week – I've loved a lot.

My first love of the week would be Nathan Fillion's new show, "Castle." It was funny, charming, turn-off-your-brain-and-enjoy piece of TV candy. I can't wait for next week's episode!

Speaking of TV, I was thrilled to see the original "Ghost Hunters" back on the telly. I'm not a fan of "Ghost Hunters International" (I'm a purist – I still love the holy trinity of Jason, Grant and Steve), so I'm welcoming back the original show with open arms. Last night's new episode certainly didn't disappoint.

My other love isn't TV-related. It's Gerard Way and Gabriel Ba's comic, "The Umbrella Academy." The second series is out now, and the fourth issue was just released. And, wow, is it a doozy of an issue. When I first read this issue I was brokenhearted that two new but exciting characters were killed off, but then the issue's ending made up for it...I'm still kinda mind-blown by that ending! I've thought about it a lot since reading it the other night and I'm still scratching my head! This is a brilliant series. I never thought I'd say this, but Way should give up this whole music thing and write comics full time. That man is a genius.

So, tell me, Scenesters, what are you in love with this week? Show and tell what you've loved!

Ah, trust me, Scratch, you're going to love this second series. A million times better than the first -- I mean, I liked the first, but this second one is really terrific.

Merry Thursday, Scene cats!

Hope your week is going well. Look for Scene Picks, Show & Tell and more later today...

* This will be the most amazing band ever: Jack White has formed a new band with the lead singer of The Kills and members of The Raconteurs and Queens of the Stone Age.

* No idea why, but "Heathers" is being turned into "a musical.":http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/content_display/news/e3i8fb6ec824ccd92fe01d5092a677d4148

* If you miss "Jericho," you'll want to read the "Jericho comics.":http://www.denofgeek.com/television/217020/new_spinoff_to_complete_jericho_story.html

* Prince will "perform for four nights":http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/-1003950193.story on Leno to promote his upcoming album.

* Do we really want Bret Michaels to tell all in a new "tell-all book":http://www.billboard.com/bbcom/news/-1003950138.story ? He promises the book will tell all about "the sex, the drugs, the rock 'n' roll, but it also gives you the diabetes." Um, yay?

* Last year's "Idol" runner-up David Archuleta will have a "guest spot":http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1606740/20090311/archuleta__david.jhtml on "Hannah Montana." Will there be unicorns and fuzzy puppies, too? Talk about a cutesy overload.

"American Idol," 3/11
by scenenow
Mar 12, 2009 | 944 views | 0 0 comments | 15 15 recommendations | email to a friend | print | permalink
Mississippi native Jasmine Murray and Jorge Nunez from Puerto Rico were sent home on "American Idol" Wednesday.

Murray, 17, of Columbus, was the first sent home of the night, followed by Nunez.

In a new twist, last night the show announced Judges' Save – a rule that the show's four judges can unanimously save one contestant from getting axed, and no one will be cut that week; however there would be a double elimination the following week. The judges can save only one contestant per season. The show cited the early eliminations of contestants like Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry as a reason for this.

The judges did not use the Judges' Save for either Murray or Nunez.
