Due to an extremely busy Wednesday, I'm just now getting to this. But I also have info on basketball players.
The newest Bulldogs arrived on campus and started classes Wednesday. Fourteen of MSU's 22 football signees – plus Clemson transfer LB Brandon Maye – and four of the five men's basketball signees have made it to Starkville.
Football signees: DB Dee Arrington, ATH Taveze Calhoun, WR Devin Fosselman, DB Zachary Jackson, DL P.J. Jones, TE/OL Daniel Knox, OL James Maiden, OL Justin Malone, WR Kendrick Market, LB Benardrick McKinney, RB Derrick Milton, WR Joe Morrow, DL Preston Smith and TE Rufus Warren.
Basketball signees: D.J. Gardner, Rodney Hood, Roquez Johnson and Shawn Long.
There are varying reasons for why some guys don't make it for the June term. A big reason is some athletes simply can't get the eligibility paperwork turned around quickly enough. In the case of football signee Shaq Perry, he will be attending Northeast Mississippi Community College this fall, as he'd planned all along.
That's what happened with basketball signee Deville Smith, who just finished school and graduated Wednesday night from Jackson Callaway. He'll be at MSU in July.
The new football players joined the returnees for summer workouts, which are directed by strength and conditioning coach Matt Balis. As for the basketball players, they've not yet gotten into the new practice facility, which is hosting summer camps right now.
