TUPELO – Shannon High School will fry no more.

The Lee County School Board accepted a $20,000 grant to install a combi-oven at Shannon High School. By accepting the Child Nutrition Integrity Grant from the Mississippi State Department of Education, the district commits not to fry food in the Shannon High School kitchen for at least five years, said Lee County Schools Child Nutrition Director Susan Killens.

The district added about $7,000 to cover the total cost of the oven, which reduces the amount of fat and calories in school lunches by baking instead of frying favorite foods.

Killen hopes to have the oven installed for the start of school in August.

The district received similar grants last year to add combi-ovens at Saltillo primary and high schools.
