JACKSON — Mississippi Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves is moving two senators into committee chairmanships.

Republican Terry Burton of Newton is the new leader of the Energy Committee, and Republican John Polk of Hattiesburg is head of the Universities and Colleges Committee.

The Energy Committee was previously chaired by Republican Merle Flowers of Southaven, who resigned from the Senate on July 11.

Burton had been the Universities and Colleges Committee chairman since early this year, so Polk succeeds him there.

Burton has been in the Senate since 1992, and Polk was first elected last November.
