VERONA – Two vacant houses burned Monday afternoon in separate incidents within hours of each other.

Verona Fire Department officials said it's unclear if the two blazes are related but an investigator was called to determine the cause of each one.

The first had engulfed an unoccupied house on Lindsey Court, located in a neighborhood behind Marvin's Building Materials. Firefighters responded to the 1:45 p.m. call within minutes and began dousing the one-story structure. Thick plumes of black smoke spiraled into the air as the fire abated.

The second fire started around 4:40 p.m. at a one-story brick home on County Road 519, about a half-mile from Palmetto Road and less than three miles from the first incident.

A neighbor said the house has been vacant for years and is owned by a family who now lives in Florida.

No one was injured in either incident, and no other structures suffered damages.
