The Amory school board is slated to meet this afternoon, and it’s expected that Ben Ashley of Falkner will be approved as the

Panthers' new football coach.

Ashley would replace Trent Hammond, who left Amory to become head coach at Tupelo.

Falkner principal Jennifer Stroupe and Ashley both confirmed Thursday to the Southern Sentinel that the Amory move was pending board approval.

Amory superintendent Tony Cook told the Monroe Journal that a board meeting was set for 2:30 p.m. today. Cook said a news conference to introduce a new coach could take place next week.

Ashley was 18-6 in two years at Falkner, leading the Eagles to the Class 1A playoffs in both seasons.

Class 4A Amory was 9-3 for Hammond last season, a year after an 11-4 run to the state semifinals.
