Sitting here in my comfy chair, being lazy, watching Louisville-Michigan State, enjoying _*Gus Johnson*_'s caffeinated call. Speaking of hoops, I had a story today wrapping up the Lady Bulldogs' fine season and looking ahead to a promising 2009-10. (Keep in mind I can't hyperlink yet, so just bear with me and look for the stuff on this site, please.) Even if you aren't crazy about women's basketball, it was intriguing to watch this team develop and grow over the course of the season, which ended in the second round of the NCAA tournament.
"I thought individuals got to a point where the team became more important than self," coach _*Sharon Fanning*_ said. "And I think when we kept getting to those points and those roles were adjusted and we made some commitment to team things, that we began to be tougher, and we began to win close games, and we began to be in position to win any game we played."
As I watched the MSU football team practice yesterday, I saw some chemistry being formed. Witness the wild celebration at practice's end when _*Christian Ducre'*_ scored on a reverse pitch. A lot of smiles out there. "It’s a lot more energy on the field, a lot more excitement, and all that helps," safety _*Charles Mitchell*_ said. Among those smiling was tailback _*Anthony Dixon*_, the subject of a story I wrote for today's Journal. He's looking pretty trim and, at the risk of speaking too soon, I think he's going to have a big season.
"He loves playing, he loves everything about it," coach _*Dan Mullen*_ said. "That’s the nice part, and he’s pretty serious. He puts a lot of work in, trying to learn the game, trying to make himself a better player. And I think you can see that in his weight loss coming into this season, and his commitment and effort he gives on the field."
In baseball news, MSU is struggling mightily against Arkansas. The Bulldogs lost Game 1, which was finished up Saturday, 20-9. They're playing two today, with the Razorbacks already winning the first one this afternoon, 5-1. State has now lost six straight SEC games.
