INDIANAPOLIS- Members of the Houston FFA Chapter in Mississippi were one of 30 teams participating in the National FFA Food Science and Technology Career Development Event (CDE). The event was held in conjunction with the 85th National FFA Convention in Indianapolis, Ind.
The team, led by advisor Karen Cook, was awarded a Bronze emblem. Members also competed for individual awards with 116 other participants.

Jacob Bridgman received a Silver emblem, Lindsay Bevels received a Silver emblem, Cory McDaniel received a Bronze emblem and Savanna Rhodes received a Bronze emblem.

The top ten individuals and the national winning team members received cash awards to recognize their success in the event. The cash awards and the food science and technology event are sponsored by Kraft Foods Group as a special project of the National FFA Foundation.

The National FFA Food Science and Technology CDE is designed to test a student’s basic knowledge of food science as well as the student’s ability to apply this knowledge to practical situations. Each team participates in a timed team product development project, and each individual participates in practicums involving food sensory evaluation and food safety and sanitation as well as a written exam.

This event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis, Ind., is one of many educational activities at the National FFA Convention and Expo in which FFA members apply classroom knowledge to real-life situations.
