Home for the holidays

HOUSTON/VARDAMAN – The last round of local Christmas parades took place last week as Houston and Vardaman both rescheduled their events due to weather.

The Civitan club in Houston sponsored the annual parade for the first time this year and invited soldiers from the 288th Sapper unit of the National Guard to attend as Grand Marshals.

The Houston parade drew floats from local churches, businesses and civic clubs as well as area entries and included festive music from the Houston High School band.

The Vardaman parade was reorganized last year and was deemed a success again this season.

“Last year was great, but this year was even better,” said organizer Cathy Dauzat. “Seeing all those kid’s faces, it was worth it.”

The parade season in the local area wrapped up Dec. 15 with the annual event in Mantee, followed by a chili supper at the Mantee VFD.

The holiday lights in Woodland will remain lit each evening through Christmas. The free event is open to the public to tour by walking or driving through.
