HOUSTON – The Lady Toppers started spring break strong but faltered at the end at the New Hope tournament.

The Lady Toppers headed to Vardaman for tournament action March 14 and made short work of both of their opponents.

The Houston girls used a big, nine-run first inning, followed by a five-run second, to take a commanding lead over Water Valley and coast in to a 15-1 win.

Audi Dendy got the win from the mound while multiple hits were recorded by Chelsea Gates (3), Chelsea Robinson, Mary Kansas Sullivan and Madeline Burdine. Gates, Sullivan and Taylor Lancaster all had doubles and Brudine had two double. Robinson had a triple and Talaja Echoles hit her signature home run.

In their second game, the lady Topper blanked South Pontotoc, 5-0, with Dendy getting the win and upping her record to 6-1.

The Houston girls posted three runs in the first inning and came back to cap the game in the bottom of the fourth. Echoles singled and Yasmeen Cooper reached on a bunt, helped by a South Pontotoc error. Lancaster popped out but courtesy runner, Tristan Graves, tagged up and scored and courtesy runner, Alexis McShan, moved to third. A passed ball sent McShan home and the Lady Toppers clinched their win.

The Lady Toppers didn’t fare as well in the New Hope tournament March 16, falling to East Central, 4-10 and to New Hope, 0-10.

“The varsity team played well in the Vardaman tournament,” said Coach Keith Jernigan. “At New Hope, we faced some real tough competition and didn’t step up at all.”

Jernigan wants the mistakes to turn into positive lessons.

“Hopefully this will show us what we have to do to play at the higher levels,” Jernigan said.

The JV squad fell to South Pontotoc, 4-5.

The Lady Toppers were scheduled to be in division play at Caledonia Tuesday and back at home hosting LeakeĀ  Central Thursday.

They will host tournament this Saturday.
