Bob Ward

AUSTIN, Texas — Robert “Bob” Mack Ward, 73, of Texas died March 15, 2013, at Hospice of Austin-Christopher House. He was born to Rebecca Hall Ward and Orville Maxie Ward on Nov. 14, 1939, in Detroit Mich., but was raised in Big Creek, Miss., with his four younger brothers.

After graduating from Big Creek High School in 1957 he began his service in the Mississippi National Guard while also working for McQuay Inc. In 1961 he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served with distinction for 22 years, earning the Meritorious Service Medal; Army Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster; Good Conduct Medal with Clasp, Bronze 4 Loops; National Defense Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon with numerals 3; Vietnam Service Medal with four Bronze Service Stars; Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device; and Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm.

Bob married Joyce Herron in 1961 and was the proud father of Bettie Ward McCarthy, born in Ft. Polk, La., in 1962, and Janet Rebecca Ward, born while stationed in Frankfurt, Germany, in 1965. After retiring from the Military as a Chief Warrant Officer 3 in 1983, he continued his service overseas working for civilian contractors in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia; Kosovo; Cairo, Egypt; and Iraq before returning to Texas where he resided until his death.

Bob’s favorite past times were hunting, fishing, woodworking, gardening and spending time with his grandchildren, Austin Scott McCarthy (21 years) and Cameron Scott McCarthy (16 years). He was a kind, gentle soul who never met a stranger and was a true friend. Even though he lived in Texas for many years, his roots and heart were with his family in Mississippi, which included his brothers Jerry, Don and Paul Ward, and where he was “Uncle Bob” to a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob was preceded in death by his mother and father, Rebecca and Orville Ward, and his brother, Terry Ward.

Bob is survived by wife, Joyce Ward; his daughters and grandchildren.

The Ward Family wants to express their gratitude to Hospice of Austin-Christopher House and the staff and caregivers who were our merciful angels in this difficult time.

Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 30, from noon to 2 p.m., immediately followed by services at the Pryor Funeral Home, located at 127 S. Main St., Calhoun City, MS. Mr. Robert Mack Ward will be laid to rest with full military honors at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Big Creek. Honorary pallbearers are Jerry, Don and Paul Ward, and Scott, Austin and Cameron McCarthy.
