Houlka traveled to Union County to open the football season facing the East Union Urchins and the Urchins came away a 40-6 winner.
The Wildcats were within striking distance, only trailed 13-6 after the first quarter, but the Urchins knocked down two touchdowns in the final minutes of the first half to gain a halftime lead of 28-6.
Houlka had the first scoring threat of the game as they blocked East Union’s initial punt and recovered at the Urchin 31-yard line. However, on the second play after the recovery, the Wildcats fumbled and East Union took over at their own 36. Three plays later the Urchins struck for the first touchdown on a 45-yard pass completion. The PAT was good and at 5:52 left in the opening quarter East Union led 7-0.
East Union scored again at the 2:08 mark in the first quarter to go up 13-0.
Houlka found a spark of offense in the next series as they covered 80 yards in two plays. Wyatt Esterley ran for 15 yards on first down to move the Wildcats to their 35-yard line. On the next play, Esterley hit Tyreque Reed in the Urchin secondary and Reed outraced the defenders to the end-zone to close the score to 13-6. The conversion attempt failed.
That would close the scoring for the Wildcats on the night as they had two more drives stopped on fumbles.
Coach Rob Allen said the team would spend this week identifying errors and correcting them.
“We’ll go over the film and show them what they did wrong and give them a chance to improve,” Allen said.”We missed tackles, we went the wrong direction, we just didn’t execute.”
The Wildcats will head to Charles Falkner Field in Okolona to take on the Chieftains Friday night with kickoff at 7 p.m.
“We’ve got Okolona (at Okolona) next week, so we’ve really got a doozy,” Allen said.
