Lady Wolves over Lady Toppers

With softball season barely underway, most local teams began their regular seasons last week and are still getting the feel of the dirt under their feet.
The Houston girls hosted East Webster Monday night for an hour-and-forty-five minute battle with the Lady Wolverines coming out on top in the end.
The Lady Wolverines took a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Bailie Sprinfield walked on and Kendall Wilkinson singled to left field, Mamie Hollenhead walked to load the bases and Jennah Pate single, scoring Springfield. Kerrigan Clark’s sac fly scored Wilkinson and Maddie Flemings sinlged for another RBI.
The Lady Toppers got on the board in the bottom of the third with Chelsea Gates’ solo homer and the Lady Wolverines knocked in four more runs in the top of the fourth for an 11-1 lead.
The Houston girls rallied in the bottom of the frame with Taylor Lancaster, Quaneshia Pratt and Alexis McShan hitting back-to-back singles to load the bases. Lexie Doss came in as DH, scoring Lancaster and Scarlett Doss’ single sent courtesy runner, Travionna Echoles, across the plate.
Gates repeated her home run hit, this time racking up three RBI to bring the Lady Toppers to 6-11.
But the Lady Wolves weren’t finished and added two in the sixth and two in the seventh to seal the win 15-7.

Houston in tourney action

The Lady Toppers postponed a game with Vardaman last Thursday and headed to tournament play in South Pontotoc Saturday.
The Houston girls split their tourney games, falling 2-1 to Tupelo and winning 2-0 over Mooreville. Scarlett Doss was the pitcher of record in both games.
In the Tupelo match, Quaneshia Pratt and Chelsea Gates both had multiple hits with Pratt knocking in a double. Against Mooreville, Mary Kansas Sullivan had multiple hits.
Coach Jeffrey Mann saw positives and negatives in the tournament action.
“We played good defense,” Mann said. “Hits were hard to come by for any team. We didn’t have timely hits and walked nine batters. You can’t afford walks when you or your opponent is not hitting. We had too many free passes and it cost us.”web hst soft
