Ethel Schwalenberg

VARDAMAN – Ethel Y. Schwalenberg, 92, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2013, at her home in Sour Lake, Texas. She was born Jan. 19, 1921, in Barfield, Ala.

She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Vardaman. She was a quilter and seamstress and loved working in her flower bed. She married Grady Schwalenberg in 1945 and they moved to Sacramento, Calif., where she worked in an aircraft factory. After World War II, they moved to Vardaman.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Parker Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Vardaman. The Rev. Don Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Poplar Springs Cemetery at Vardaman.

She is survived by three sons, Gary (Pat) Schwalenberg of Texas, Davy (Roseanne) Schwalenberg of Mississippi and Don (Joy) Schwalenberg of Mississippi; four grandchildren, Whitt (Angie) Schwalenberg, Taylor (William) Pruett and Deanna Schwalenberg, all  of Mississippi, and Leslie (Mike) Machtinger of Virginia; four great-grandchildren, Madalyn Schwalenberg, Grady Machtinger, Emmy and Patrick Pruett; two sisters, Vida Childs of Georgia, Geneva Smith of Alabama; three sisters-in-law, Inez Schwalenberg of Mississippi, and Nancy Yates and Nadyne Yates of Alabama; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur C. Yates and Ettie Pitts Yates; her husband; a grandson, Ed Schwalenberg; brothers, Albert, Abra, Edward, Clayton, Cloyse and Willis Yates; and a sister, Edna Fincher.

Pallbearers will be Sonny Burt, Rocky Fleming, Rodney Gillespie, Whitt Schwalenberg, James Ray Schwalenberg and Dewayne Winters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
