LISA VOYLES: Shine the light

DIIA__MUG_Lisa_Voyles_newDuring my tenure here at the Chickasaw Journal, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some interesting people and attend some really cool events. I’ve even said, more than once, “That was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.”

But this time – it really is.
Last week, students from Houston, Houlka and Okolona carried a cross through our county.
The Mississippi Glowing for Christ project is a partnership of Mission Mississipp and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. The goal is to take the cross through all 82 counties by foot. Each school has representatives who volunteer to walk and carry the cross to hand it off to the next school.
I met up with the kids from Okolona High School Thursday morning as they handed off to Houlka. And I was on site when Houlka handed off to Houston. Houston continued the journey into Clay County to hand off to West Point.
And more of our kids were involved Friday as the cross made its way through Webster County via students from Hebron and East Webster. It will go through Winona and back up through Slate Springs en route to Calhoun County.
If you have an opportunity to see this project anywhere along the route, jump on it.
It is awesome!
I mean screamin’ all-caps with four exclamation points and a half-dozen smiley face emoticons AWESOME!
The very sight of our youth working in this coordinated effort to share the love of Christ took my breath away.
Then, thanks to my employment, the best part came about.
I got to talk to them.
I wanted their opinions on how it felt, why they did it, what it meant and how it will help our community.
They blew me completely away!
No, I’m not going to tell you what they said here. You’ll just have to turn to page 1B and read it for yourself.
I think you’ll be as impressed as I was. If the state of our community lies in the hands of these young people, we’re in good shape.
They are committed to their faith and to sharing it with others.
Hmmmmm, reminds me of something about letting a child lead us.
They are certainly on the right path and I hope they’ll let this old lady tag along.
