Three children die in Vardaman house fire

1STOCK Fire_graphicVARDAMAN – Three children were killed in an early morning fire in Vardaman Saturday.

The children, 7-year-old twins Yobani and Isabel Razo and 9-year-old Oscar Razo were pronounced dead at the scene of the fire, according to Calhoun County Coroner Jerry Flemming.

Calhoun County Sheriff Greg Pollan said the call went out through 911 at approximately 2:45 a.m and Vardaman Fire Department was first on the scene, followed by the Varadaman Police Department, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and the state fire marshal’s office.

Pollan said the children’s mother, Kimberly Brown, and two older siblings were at their First Street home and escaped the flames. They were transported to Trace Regional Hospital in Houston where they were treated and released.
Pollan said they suspect the fire was started by a small portable electric heater in the living room but the State Fire Marshal’s Office is still investigating the fire.
At this point, he said, no foul play is suspected.
The blaze was put out by about 5 a.m.

Grief counselors are slated to be on hand Monday at Vardaman Elementary School where the three children were students.

Vardaman is a town of about 1,300 people in Calhoun County.
