Carl Spencer

VARDAMAN – Carl Dewitt Spencer, 71, died Monday, April 21, 2014, at his residence. He was born June 19, 1942, in the Elzey community in Vardaman.

He was a graduate of Vardaman High School in 1960 and a graduate of the University of Mississippi in 1965, where he earned a bachelor’s degree, a master’s in special education in 1967 and a specialist degree in 1970. He taught special education in Vardaman, was a Title One Coordinator and a Superintendent of Education from 1992-2000. He served on the State Mental Health Advisory Board, Communicate Advisory Board for more than 37 years and was a secretary of Calhoun County Democratic Party, a loyal “Yellow Dog” Democrat.
Services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 23, at Elzey Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Wil Howie and the Rev. Laura Fairfax officiating. Parker Memorial Funeral Home of Vardaman is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his wife, Zilla Rose Morgan Spencer of Vardaman; two daughters, Leah Rose Spencer (Laura Fairfax) of Pittsboro, N.C. and Morgan Spencer Cutturini (Al) of Oxford; one grandson, Logan Mullen of Oxford; special niece, Spencer Moore of Chapel Hill, N.C.; one sister, Linda Kay Spencer Moore (Jimmy) of Vardaman; and one brother; Dwight Lee Spencer of Greensboro, N.C.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Charles and Ludie Annis Loftis; and a brother, Charles Douglas Spencer
Honorary pallbearers are Curt Alford, Dudley Davis, Charles Herring, Bobby Phillips, Steve Walls and James Young.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
