There was great report on Friday by Sarah Carr of The Hechinger Report about the racial divide in Mississippi’s charter school debate.
I highly recommend reading it to understand another nuance of what is expected to be the most hotly-contested issue of the current session. It speaks with Kenneth Wayne Jones, the only black Senator to vote for charter schools last year; examines the skepticism of black leaders and the reasons for their distrust and also pulls from examples in Washington D.C. and New Orleans.
The Hechinger Report is a non-profit news organization based at Columbia University in New York. Its focus is on producing in-depth education journalism. They are also working on an extensive project examining Mississippi’s education system and have done a great job with it. Those stories are available here.
