MHSAA football championships moving? Bout time!

It’s been a rumor for a while that the MHSAA was exploring moving the football championships out of Jackson’s Veterans Memorial Stadium.

We learned last night that the deal is nearly sealed, along with getting a couple of Alabama staples to Mississippi soil.

The football move – apparently 70-75 percent done, completed by June – should have already happened. The Vet, like Saltillo coach Pat Byrd said, has served it’s purpose. But it’s, for lack of a better word, a dump. The stadium is decrepit, the parking is horrible, and selfishly, the pressbox is an atrocity.

But looks like the association – out of its contract with the stadium – is finally putting words into works.

Associate director Rickey Neaves said he sees no negatives with moving the championships into a rotation at Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Southern Miss.

And for the concerns some from the coast have expressed about driving to Oxford, stop it. North schools have driven three and four hours for years to Jackson. And I’ll go out on a limb and say no coach is going to blow off a shot at a title, even if they had to pack a parka. See: Falkner coach Cory Armstrong in the link.
