Game 3 Prediction: MSU at Troy

• The matchup: MSU (2-0) at Troy (1-1)

The kickoff: 6:04 p.m., ESPN3.com

The weather: Warm and sunny, should be pleasant once the sun drops.

The line: MSU –16.0

MSU is the first SEC team to ever visit Troy’s Veterans Memorial Stadium, a place that has seen the Trojans celebrate wins over BCS schools. They beat Missouri in 2004, and Oklahoma State in 2007. Does this year’s squad have what it takes to pull an upset?

Tough to say. Troy is coming off its first losing season (3-9) since 2005, but 22nd-year coach Larry Blakeney knows how to get his program back on track. And the game is at home. It’ll be the first road game of the year for MSU, and the first road game ever at this level for the boatload of freshmen who’ve been playing in the first two games.

Then there’s the letdown factor, what with MSU coming off a huge emotional win over Auburn. The Bulldogs must guard against overconfidence and a loss of focus. They’ll have to match the high energy level that Troy is sure to come out with.

I believe this MSU team will be able to summon up that focus and energy, and it has clearly superior talent to Troy. Perhaps the Trojans make it a game for a half or so, but I’m expecting the Bulldogs to keep on rolling and post another double-digit win.

• The prediction: MSU 41, Troy 14.

I applaud your optimism but question your accuracy. I would love to see scores as you guys are predicting but will just be happy to come out with a win. I’m too old and have some really bad memories of games where State was supposed to win big and got beaten by lesser teams. The guys better come out and play like they were going up against AL or LSU because I can guarantee you that Troy is going to be playing that way.
