MSU senior cornerback Johnthan Banks is one of three finalists for the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given annually to the nation’s most outstanding defensive back.
Banks, who starred at East Webster High School, is only the second Bulldog to be named a finalist for the award. The other was Fred Smoot in 2000. Banks has four interceptions this season, along with six pass break-ups, 56 tackles and 2.0 tackles-for-loss.
This means Banks has an invite to the Home Depot College Football Awards ceremony Dec. 6 in Orlando. The winner will be announced at that time on ESPN. The other finalists are Alabama’s Dee Milliner and Fresno State’s Phillip Thomas.
Banks is also a finalist for the Conerly Trophy, which goes to the top player in Mississippi.
