Egg Bowl: No. 25 MSU (8-3, 4-3 SEC) at Ole Miss (5-6, 2-5), Saturday, 6 p.m., ESPNU (Clay Matvick, Matt Stinchcomb and Allison Williams)
With the Egg Bowl comes plenty of chatter, and that’s a theme of our coverage of this game in today’s Journal. You’ve got fans sending texts to players, one coach wanting to guard against his players saying too much, and another coach you doesn’t want to “rein in” his players. It all makes for some fun reads on this Tuesday morning.
• Let’s start with my story on MSU quarterback Tyler Russell, who has been getting some text messages from Ole Miss fans. Those messages simply motivate him, he said.
• First-year Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze is taking measures to quell any trash talk, initially prohibiting any players from talking this week. He relented on Monday, and so reporters will get to speak with a handful of Rebels. In fact, quarterback Bo Wallace spoke yesterday, and he apparently has been receiving texts from MSU fans. Here’s video of Wallace.
• MSU coach Dan Mullen, when informed of Freeze’s initial move to block player access, said, “I don’t put the reins on our guys that much. They are who they are. They’ve got to be who they are. They know how important a game this is.” In my MSU notebook, Mullen and a couple of his players do some talking.
• While Freeze made a point not to bring up the Egg Bowl with his players before this week, the players have been talking about it. Sophomore safety Cody Prewitt hasn’t been able to get last year’s 31-3 State win off his mind. “I’ve tried to put it in the past, but it still hangs back there, and I’m ready to do something about it.”
