Banks Named Second-Team All-American by AP

Mississippi State senior cornerback Johnthan Banks has been named a second-team All-American by the Associated Press. The team was released this morning.

It’s the third consecutive year MSU has had a player named to the AP’s All-American squad. Defensive tackle Fletcher Cox was a third-teamer last season, and offensive tackle Derek Sherrod was a second-team pick in 2010. Both Cox and Sherrod were selected in the first round of the NFL Draft following those seasons. Banks is projected as a first- or second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.’s Todd McShay ranks him as the No. 31 prospect.

Last week Banks, a product of nearby East Webster High School, won the Jim Thorpe Award, which goes to the nation’s top defensive back. Yet he was not a first-teamer in the eyes of the AP voters, who placed Alabama’s Dee Milliner and Oregon State’s Jordan Poyer on the first team at cornerback.

Banks has recorded 59 tackles, four interceptions, seven pass break-ups, 2.0 tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery this season. He has 16 career interceptions, which is tied for the school record with Walt Harris. He has one game left in which to break the mark, when MSU plays No. 21 Northwestern in the Gator Bowl on Jan. 1.
