Recruiting: Jones Makes Big Impression in Florida

Good morning, people.

I’m back after a day off, and we’ve got a a couple of things to talk about. Let’s start with recruiting, since that is what will dominate water cooler talk over the next month or so.

My man Brandon Speck has been in Orlando this week covering the Under Armour All-America festivities, which means he’s been talking with some of the nation’s top recruits. One of those prospects is MSU commit Chris Jones, a five-star defensive end from Houston, Miss. Jones has made a strong impression this week and will be a player to watch when the game kicks off in St. Petersburg at 4 p.m. today on ESPN.

Speck also caught up with Robert Nkemdiche, the nation’s No. 1 recruit. Nothing new on where he might sign; Ole Miss is the leading candidate right now.

Y’all be sure to follow Brandon on Twitter (@brandonspeck) for updates from today’s all-star game, and he’ll have full coverage of it in Saturday’s Journal.

• MSU’s men played hoops last night, and they won. Convincingly. The Bulldogs stomped New Orleans, 97-46, to improve to 5-7 entering SEC play. The Bulldogs host South Carolina on Wednesday.

Speaking of basketball, USM was for some reason playing an NAIA team yesterday, and the Golden Eagles won by a final of 135-41. Oy.

I am the online content coordinator for I also co-host The Memo and Prep Rally podcasts and host the Newsbreak program. Previously at the Journal, I covered Mississippi State athletics (2008-13), high schools (2004-08), and was on the copy desk (2002-04).
