David Turner Hired as Defensive Line Coach

David Turner is returning to Mississippi State and once again will coach the defensive line.

Head coach Dan Mullen confirmed via text message this morning that Turner, who coached MSU’s defensive line from 2007-09, has been hired to coach that position again. He replaces Chris Wilson, who coached that position for three years and was not retained as defensive coordinator after this past season. Geoff Collins was promoted to defensive coordinator.

Paul Jones of Bulldawgs247.com first reported Turner’s hiring.

Turner was hired by Sylvester Croom in 2007 and stayed on through Mullen’s first year at the helm. He then left for a job on Joker Phillips‘ staff at Kentucky, as both defensive line coach and assistant head coach. Phillips was fired after a 2-10 season, and Florida State defensive coordinator Mark Stoops was hired. Stoops did not retain Turner or anyone else from Phillips’ staff.

Turner had spoken with Mullen about the DC vacancy three years ago after Carl Torbush left for Kansas, but the job went to Manny Diaz, who’s now at Texas.

Prior to his first stint at MSU, Turner spent one season at Alabama as defensive ends coach. He was defensive line coach at Vanderbilt from 2002-05, and before that spent one season as defensive ends coach at Minnesota. He’s held positions at several other schools, including Virginia (1997-2000, defensive tackles and linebackers), N.C. State (1995-96, defensive ends and linebackers), Kentucky (1993-94, defensive ends) and James Madison (1991-92, linebackers). His full bio can be found here.

MSU is still seeking a replacement for departed cornerbacks coach Melvin Smith, who took a job at Auburn.
