Mississippi State guard Craig Sword has been named the SEC freshman of the week, the league office announced this morning.

The 6-foot-3 guard scored a career-high 18 points in MSU’s 56-54 win over South Carolina on Wednesday, then on Saturday had 16 points in a 72-61 win at Georgia. Sword made two free throws to break a late tie and followed that up with a big steal and dunk in the South Carolina win. He made 12 of 21 shots in the two games combined and averaged 3.5 rebounds.

Sword is the second Bulldog to win freshman of the week this season, with center Gavin Ware also taking the award, and he’s the seventh different MSU player to be so honored.

For the season, Sword is averaging 9.6 points and 3.2 rebounds per game. His Bulldogs return to action at 8 p.m. Wednesday against Alabama.
