On the Links: Recruiting Recap; Basketball Updates

Well, that was a fun weekend on the ol’ recruiting front, was it not? Let’s recap.

You had five-star defensive end Chris Jones, an MSU commit, waffling on whether he was going to visit Ole Miss before finally doing so Friday night. It was thought he might visit State as well, but he never did. Of course, he’d just been in Starkville the weekend prior. Should this worry MSU fans? Well, I’d never feel comfortable about any verbal commitment – ever – until the kid signed. It’s the nature of recruiting.

For instance, on Sunday, South Panola offensive lineman Deon Mix de-committed from State just a few days after making an official visit there. He had been committed since June. Then later Sunday, MSU picked up a commitment from quarterback Damian Williams, who had previously been committed to Southern Miss. That gives the Bulldogs two QBs in this class.

So what’s next? Well, things aren’t likely to calm down over these last nine days until signing day. There will be plenty of yapping by fans (on both sides) about Jones, who’s feeling pressure from all sides right now. MSU is still pursuing other big-time prospects, including four-star cornerback MacKensie Alexander. There’s one weekend of visits remaining, and so coaches will be making their hardest sales pitches down the stretch.

So let’s all try to get through this together with at least a modicum of sanity and perspective.

• Let’s talk hoops. MSU is riding a four-game losing streak, and you can read my weekly rewind in today’s Journal. I also authored the weekly Ole Miss/MSU lookahead, and I’ll have more on what’s coming this week after we speak with coach Rick Ray on the SEC coaches teleconference and at his weekly press conference.

On the women’s side, the Lady Bulldogs took down Ole Miss on Sunday, and we’ve got the story for you. It’s the first SEC win for new coach Vic Schaefer, who’s a guest on my radio show (LockeDown Corner) this morning on Bulldog Sports Radio.

I am the online content coordinator for DJournal.com. I also co-host The Memo and Prep Rally podcasts and host the Newsbreak program. Previously at the Journal, I covered Mississippi State athletics (2008-13), high schools (2004-08), and was on the copy desk (2002-04).

  • Man, recruiting is more covert now than ever. I hope CJ stays with State. It seems like Nkemdiche is the Pied Piper. He has got a monster following with these top recruits, they seem to follow him wherever he goes. And can you shed some light on how Freeze is pulling these top 20 guys, I know all of them don’t have a sibling already enrolled there, slick on Houston Nutt’s part by the way. I mean Ole Miss would get the occasional 5 star to come there, but a chance at a top 5 class was never in the cards before now.

simply a coach with class veres a coach with no class, we all drank thecool aid when mullins landed but since the ten win year we have gone backwards, i now see how arrogant he is and his lack of Chrisitan faith. maybe after this year the adminsration will see he is not moving us forward but taking us back, Croom was a man of class, sadly he only had a one win season, i wish he could have got more wins and kept building, even Saban said on the ESPN documentary that Croom should have had more time and Saban knows more about football than any one that is in the Sports Administration at State
