MSU’s Alwal Wins Gillom Trophy

Mississippi State’s Martha Alwal has won the Gillom Trophy, which is awarded to Mississippi’s top female college basketball player. The announcement was made at a ceremony in Jackson this afternoon.

Alwal, a 6-foot-4 sophomore center from Worthington, Minn., averaged 12.1 points and an SEC-leading 9.7 rebounds per game this season for the Lady Bulldogs, who went 13-17 under first-year coach Vic Schaefer. Alwal shot 45.5 percent from the floor and 78.9 percent at the free throw line, and she averaged 2.6 blocks per game, which tied for first in the league.

Alwal, who recorded 16 double-doubles this season, beat out Southern Miss point guard Jamierra Faulkner and Ole Miss point guard Valencia McFarland for the award.
