On the Links: March Madness, Spring Football Arrive

Happy Thursday, people, and why shouldn’t it be happy? March Madness kicks into gear today, which means you, I and the rest of America will see our productivity plummet as our happiness rises. It’s one of my favorite days of the year. (Still need a bracket? Here you go.)

But that’s not the only reason to be happy. MSU has begun spring practices, hitting the fields yesterday for the first of 15 sessions. You can read my update right here. State is focusing on installation and teaching at the beginning of spring, so there wasn’t a whole lot to see Wednesday. Between now and Saturday’s practice, coaches and players will go over the film and try to learn.

“So we’re going to have the opportunity to practice today; we’ll watch this with the guys tomorrow; we’ll meet on Friday to go through the Saturday installation and review today and practice Saturday,” coach Dan Mullen said yesterday. “Then you have a couple of days until Tuesday to review everything before you go out there and practice.”

Not done yet. I had another football story in today’s Journal, a feature on junior defensive end Preston Smith. He’s got a chance to be a breakout player this fall and is currently listed first on the depth chart. He’s packed on about 30 pounds since arriving to MSU in 2011 and has the tools to be a big-time player.

That’s all for now. The Madness approacheth.
