Spring Practice: Bulldogs Pick Up Energy, Do Red Zone Work

Mississippi State cranked things up a little bit today during its fourth practice of the spring, and the last one before everyone took off for Easter weekend. It was the Bulldogs’ second day in pads, and they had some officials out there for some 11-on-11 and red zone work. The energy really picked up during the red zone portion at the end of practice, and coach Dan Mullen liked what he saw there.

That’s Mullen in the video above, and I’ve got cornerbacks coach Deshea Townsend below, along with some video of passing drills. And now, some observations from today’s practice.

• Receiver Jameon Lewis stuck out, making several catches on short routes, both inside and out. That’s what he needs to do this season, make those short catches and then turn on the afterburners. He also absorbed a big (and slightly early) hit from Will Redmond during 11-on-11 but popped right back up. Lewis also ran for a touchdown on a reverse in red zone drills.

• Several receivers and tight ends had passes thrown their way today and looked good, but the defense had its moments, too. Sophomore cornerback Cedric Jiles broke up a strong deep throw by Tyler Russell, and redshirt freshman linebacker Richie Brown intercepted Russell in the end zone during skeleton drills.

• The running backs all ran strong today. LaDarius Perkins broke off a long touchdown run during 11-on-11 and had some other good runs. Josh Robinson scored a couple of times during goal line work. Derrick Milton was able to get outside a few times, and he also bulled in from a yard out in a fourth-and-goal situation. He also caught a TD pass on a wheel route.

• Lewis and safety Nickoe Whitley were working on punt returns, for whatever that’s worth.

MSU will be back on the practice fields Tuesday.

  • Thanks for the baseball coverage. I guess it makes things easier when relying on “school reports.”
    You’re the worst beatwriter ever.

    • I’ll need to see a ranking metric to back up that claim.

      • For those who’ve ever covered MSU athletics, here’s the best I can do for now: (1) Bradon Marcello; (2) Gregg Ellis; (3) everybody else; (4) you.

  • Love and Cox gonna be the starters at cb and Hughes and Whit at the safeties!
