Spring Football: Bulldogs Wrap Up Installation; Videos of Russell, Mullen, McKinney

Mississippi State held its sixth practice of the spring in a steady drizzle this afternoon, and there was general agreement among all involved that this felt more like bowl prep than spring practice. Despite the elements, the Bulldogs seemed quite energized on what coach Dan Mullen called “the last big installation day.”

He also said some younger players are starting to hit the proverbial wall when it comes to learning and retention, but he’s looking forward to the spring’s first full scrimmage at noon Saturday at Davis Wade Stadium.

“It’s all in now. We can open it up on Saturday a little bit and see who can process it and know what to do,” Mullen said.

“It’s difficult for those guys,” quarterback Tyler Russell said. “Install, it’s a lot of plays, it’s a lot of different situations that can happen in a game and practice. Just because this is how it’s drawn up doesn’t mean this is how it’s going to happen.”

I was out there in the rain for close to two hours, so I have a handful of observations for you, although I must say it’s really difficult to see what’s happening with raindrops on your glasses.

• During skeleton drills, redshirt freshman receiver Brandon Holloway flashed that speed of his when he caught a pass and took off down the sideline untouched.

• Then, during scrimmage work. a good deep pass bounced right off Holloway’s hands and into the arms of linebacker Ferlando Bohanna.

• I saw something rare today: A Malcolm Johnson drop. But the tight end came back later and made a nice snag over his head.

• Slot receiver Jameon Lewis made a catch deep over the middle and had a good run after the catch. Haven’t seen him thrown to on deep routes that often this spring.

• Tailback Derrick Milton has been running with a lot of confidence this spring, and he broke off a long one between the tackles.

Here are a couple more videos for you.
