FINAL: MSU 2, Florida 0 (Game 2)

Recapping MSU’s 2-0 win over Florida at Dudy Noble Field on Saturday afternoon.

The buzz: MSU (26-8, 5-6 SEC) earned its first SEC series victory of the season behind the arm of senior right-hander Kendall Graveman, who tossed a complete game for the second consecutive week. Two early runs were more than enough for Graveman and the MSU defense, which made no errors and turned three double plays.

Big inning: State went up 2-0 in the first inning, with leadoff man Adam Frazier doubling to get things going. He scored when Wes Rea was issued a bases-loaded walk, and then Alex Detz scored on C.T. Bradford‘s groundout.

• Key stats: Florida was 0 of 1 with runners in scoring position. … MSU was 6 of 16 on advancement opportunities, while Florida was 1 of 7. … MSU left six men on base, while UF stranded four.

Florida at the plate: The Gators (14-18, 4-7) had five hits. … Justin Schafer had two hits. … Florida had men on first and second with one out in the seventh, but then Zack Powers grounded into a 6-3 double play to end the threat.

MSU at the plate: MSU had seven hits. … Frazier broke out of a 2-for-23 slump by going 2 of 4 with a double and a run scored. … Detz and Brett Pirtle also had two hits apiece.

Florida on the mound: Starter Danny Young, a freshman lefty, worked four innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. … Flamethrower Ryan Harris tossed 2 1/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts and no walks. … Bobby Poyner threw two-thirds of an inning without any trouble, while Mike Vinson gave up one hit in an inning of work.

• MSU on the mound: Graveman allowed five hits, struck out two and walked two. He threw 107 pitches and got to a three-ball count only three times, according to coach John Cohen. Not surprisingly, Graveman got 19 groundball outs.

Quotable: “I felt like they kind of laid down after we put that up. They’ve been struggling besides last week, so I guess that might be part of it. I feel like tomorrow if we come out and do the same, they might do it again.” – Frazier, on MSU’s two-run first inning

Bottom line: Graveman is pitching at a whole different level, and Cohen said he doesn’t recall one of his pitchers having back-to-back outings like Graveman’s had. The Bulldogs now have a chance to get the sweep and pull to .500 in league play. Cohen said Jacob Lindgren, who’s been out with a sore elbow, could start tomorrow if all goes well in the bullpen prior to the game. Florida’s starter is still undecided.
