MSU senior catcher Nick Ammirati has been named the SEC player of the week, the league office announced this afternoon.
Ammirati had a big weekend at the plate, going 6 of 11 with three RBIs and three runs scored in a three-game series versus Auburn. He also threw out a pair of baserunners. For the season, Ammirati is batting .321.
He’s been forced into full-time duty with the recent hand injury to senior Mitch Slauter. The two had already been splitting time this season, and Ammirati has made 23 starts. He’s helped handle a pitching staff that’s second in the SEC in ERA, at 2.37. In MSU’s series against Auburn, the pitching staff had a collective ERA of 1.33.
“The blocks, the receiving, the way he’s handled our pitching staff, the pitches he’s called, the key hits he’s gotten – it’s just been outstanding,” MSU coach John Cohen said after Saturday’s 6-0 win, in which Ammirati had two hits, including a two-run single.
If you missed it the other day, here’s postgame video of Ammirati on Saturday.
