MSU-Ole Miss Pregame: Bulldogs Aim to Beat Wahl, Avoid Sweep

Previewing today’s series finale between No. 21 Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

• First pitch: 1 p.m.

Records: MSU 36-15 (13-13 SEC), Ole Miss 35-16 (14-12)

Pitching matchup: MSU LHP Jacob Lindgren (4-2, 3.44) vs. Ole Miss RHP Bobby Wahl (9-0, 1.20)

MSU lineup: SS Adam Frazier, DH Alex Detz, RF Hunter Renfroe, 2B Brett Pirtle, 1B Wes Rea, CF C.T. Bradford, 3B Sam Frost, C Nick Ammirati, LF Demarcus Henderson

Ole Miss lineup: LF Tanner Mathis, SS Austin Anderson, C Stuart Turner, 3B Andrew Mistone, CF Auston Bousfield, 1B Sikes Orvis, RF Preston Overbey, DH Will Allen, 2B Christian Helsel

What to watch for: MSU might have lost the series yesterday, but there’s still plenty to gain from a win today. For one, it would avoid the ignominy of being swept by one’s rival. More important, it would bring the Bulldogs into a tie with the Rebels in the SEC standings and at least keep alive the hopes of hosting an NCAA regional. Problem is, MSU is facing a pitcher in Wahl who has allowed more than one earned run in SEC play just once this year. Over his last five starts – not counting the one inning he threw Friday before the rain came – Wahl has an ERA of 0.49. MSU slugger Hunter Renfroe had this to say last night about facing Wahl: “He’s just gotta throw it in the strike zone. That’s all I’ve got to say to that.”
