South Carolina-MSU Pregame: Graveman, Bulldogs Look to Claim Series

Previewing today’s game between No. 14 South Carolina and No. 24 Mississippi State.

First pitch: 6:30 p.m.

• Records: South Carolina 38-15 (16-11 SEC), MSU 39-15 (15-13)

• Pitching matchup: South Carolina LHP Jordan Montgomery (4-1, 1.86) vs. MSU RHP Kendall Graveman (5-5, 3.00)

• South Carolina lineup: 2B Max Schrock, 3B Chase Vergason, SS Joey Pankake, DH LB Dantzler, C Grayson Greiner, LF Graham Saiko, 1B Kyle Martin, RF Connor Bright, CF Tanner English

• MSU lineup: SS Adam Frazier, 3B Alex Detz, RF Hunter Renfroe, 2B Brett Pirtle, 1B Wes Rea, CF C.T. Bradford, LF Demarcus Henderson, C Nick Ammirati, DH Derrick Armstrong

• What to watch for: After a comeback win last night, MSU is in position to win its fifth SEC series of the season. A win today also keeps hope alive of earning the No. 4 seed for next week’s SEC Tournament, and the first-round bye that comes with that. Graveman is looking to return to the form he showed when tossing three consecutive complete games earlier this season. Over his last three starts, Graveman has an ERA of 7.05. If MSU wins today (or tomorrow), it will be the program’s first 40-win regular season since 1997, when it went 40-16 before making a run to the College World Series.

• Pregame playlist: A few songs from my iPod to set the tone on what’s been a wet Friday…

–”Rain,” Us Baby Bear Bones

–”No Rain,” Blind Melon

–”I’m No Stranger to the Rain,” Keith Whitley

–”Raincoat,” Crash Kings

–”Swimming,” Brendan Benson
