Bulldogs Beat Bears, 6-1, Advance to Super Regional Round

Hunter Renfroe had three hits and two RBIs, and reliever Chad Girodo tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball as No. 14 Mississippi State defeated Central Arkansas, 6-1, in the Starkville Regional title game Monday night.

The Bulldogs (46-18) have advanced to play Virginia in the Charlottesville Regional this weekend. The Cavaliers are the No. 6 national seed and won their regional on Sunday.

Alex DetzAdam Frazier and Demarcus Henderson had two hits apiece. Detz, the designated hitter, was named the regional’s most outstanding player, going 8 for 13 over four games.

Girodo struck out a career-high 12, allowing only a meaningless run in the ninth inning to improve to 7-1. The offense gave plenty of support, scoring three times over the first two innings and collecting 11 hits.

UCA (42-22) had six hits and left 10 men on base.

This will be State’s second super regional trip under fifth-year coach John Cohen. The Bulldogs played at Florida in 2011, losing in three games.
