Countdown to Kickoff: 28 Days

We’re counting down to MSU’s season opener against Oklahoma State on Aug. 31, giving you a significant number to ponder as August trudges on. Today’s number is…

Dan Mullen has taken MSU’s offense to new heights, and last season the passing game was the most prolific it’s been in school history. The Bulldogs had a school-record 28 touchdown passes, eclipsing the old mark by nine – and that old mark was set the year before. So, while Starkville hasn’t exactly been home to Quarterback U., this could be the start of a favorable trend for MSU’s offense.

Tyler Russell threw 24 of those TD passes to set an individual school record, and he’s back for one more year. We could see the team record fall yet again, especially if backup Dak Prescott continues to progress as coaches hope. He accounted for the other four touchdown passes last season, and coaches have a fair amount of confidence in the third-year sophomore’s arm.

The TD mark was just one of several passing records to fall last season. Russell alone set 11 single-season records, and he’s in position to claim a few more, including several career marks. A big one is career TD passes: Russell has 37, just one behind record-holder Derrick Taite.
