Countdown to Kickoff: 11 Days

We’re counting down to MSU’s season opener against Oklahoma State on Aug. 31, giving you a significant number to ponder as August trudges on. Today’s number is…

It has been noted here during the Countdown to Kickoff that MSU made 19 interceptions last season, and that it will be tough to reach that number again this fall. But if State is to approach such a number again, chances are that cornerback Justin Cox will be a major reason.

The junior college transfer made 11 interceptions during his two years at East Mississippi Community College. Originally an MSU signee coming out of West Point High School, Cox is expected to start this season and help ease the losses of Johnthan Banks and Darius Slay. He enrolled at MSU in January and was thus able to go through spring drills, so he should be able to acclimate to SEC football without a whole lot of trouble.

Coach Dan Mullen has expressed an expectation that juco transfers be able to contribute immediately, and Cox is filling an especially important role given the aforementioned personnel losses. Cox has good size (6-foot-3, 195 pounds) and the kind of speed necessary to be a cover corner. He was a four-star recruit out of EMCC, with 247Sports rating him as the 33rd-best prospect in the country regardless of position.
