STARKVILLE, Miss. – Tied at one in the final inning, senior Brett Pirtle cranked out an RBI double to the gap in right and fellow senior Alex Detz scored the winning run via a bases-loaded walk as Gray picked up a 3-2 win vs. Black in Mississippi State baseball’s fourth five-inning scrimmage of the fall Wednesday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The Diamond Dawgs will host their fifth scrimmage this Friday around 6:30 p.m. at the “Carnegie Hall of College Baseball.” Admission is free.

Gray started the scoring in the first, which began with a leadoff walk by Pirtle, who was making his fall scrimmage debut after attending his brother’s wedding in Texas. After advancing to second, the Tyler, Texas, native scored on a blooper to shallow left by junior Matthew Britton.

Black evened it up a couple innings later thanks to a suicide squeeze bunt by senior Demarcus Henderson, which scored freshman Reid Humphreys.

Deadlocked in a 1-1 tie in the final frame, Pirtle ripped a double to the gap in right field, allowing freshman Joey Swinarski to tap the dish. A few batters later, Detz trotted across home plate as the winning run thanks to a bases-loaded walk.

Junior transfer Jake Vickerson helped make things interesting in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff double. Henderson pushed the Vickerson across home thanks to another bunt, which was fielded and thrown into right field, allowing Vickerson to score.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
