SEC Media Days: Gavin Ware

Mississippi State University

Forward Gavin Ware

On his new physical appearance…

“Coming into the season, I was about 290. So you know, to drop down to 260 it helped me become more agile and move my feet a little bit more. When I decreased in weight, I gained strength. You know, just as far as getting more reps in, like conditioning. I am able to have a longer wind. I’m able to get up and down the floor more quickly and more easily than last year. With defense, I can move my feet more.”

On knowing his role down low…

“My first day with Coach (Rick) Ray, when he visited my house, he told me I needed to know my role. He said you are 6-9 and about 260 (pounds) so there is no reason for you being out on the perimeter. He was just like, be that low post presence and you will be able to be successful next season. I’ve been believing that. He has been my motivation every single day in practice.”

On why his team is better this year…

“There are more bodies. Last year we had the coaches play; we used to bang with them. Now with more bodies, it is more competitive. Everyone is fighting for a position. Now, there is more intensity; more competition. I think that will carry over into the game.”

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
