STARKVILLE – Mississippi State redshirt senior right-hander Ben Bracewell pitched well through 3 1/3 innings as Black picked up an 8-4 victory against Gray Friday night at Dudy Noble Field in MSU’s 13th scrimmage of the fall. The two teams return to the diamond Saturday for a 1 p.m. exhibition. Admission is free.
Bracewell lasted into the fourth inning, striking out a pair while yielding a run on two hits. Relief pitchers Jake Billingsley (0.2 IP), Will Cox(0.2) and All-American closer Jonathan Holder (1.0) all had scoreless outings.
Offensively, redshirt freshman cleanup hitter Daniel Garner went 2-for-2 with a walk and a pair of runs. Junior transfer Seth Heck was 1-for-1 at the plate with a walk, hit by pitch and two RBIs. Fellow junior transfer Cody Walker drove in a game-high three runs on a 1-for-2 night, scoring a run as well.
Black jumped on the board quickly in the first with three runs on four hits and a walk. Redshirt freshman Cody Brown reached first with a one-out worm burner up the middle for a base hit and was joined on the bags when redshirt junior Wes Rea battled back from an 0-2 count to walk. The bases became juiced when Garner lined a single to left. Next, junior Matthew Britton singled through the 4-3 hole, scoring Brown. With a Dawg on every bag, Heck blooped a single to the gap in right field, plating both Rea and Garner.
Gray scored its first run of the game when senior Derrick Armstrong reached first on an error, stole second, moved to third on a grounder and scored on another groundout.
Walker broke it open in the bottom of the third with a three-run bases-clearing double. Following a one-out walk by Britton, Garner singled for the second time of the afternoon. Heck then drew a base on balls to load the bases and Walker drove them all home with a two-bagger to the gap in left. Walker then scored on an RBI single through the left side by freshman Brent Rooker to make it 7-1 in favor of Black.
The two teams traded runs in the fourth when senior C.T. Bradford drove in fellow senior Henderson on an RBI single for Gray and Rea scored on a wild pitch for Black.
Gray cut it to an 8-4 Black lead in the fifth with a solo homer by freshman Dylan Ingram and an RBI single by senior Brett Pirtle.
