STARKVILLE – Mississippi State junior center Martha Alwal was named second team Preseason All-SEC by the league’s coaches.
Alwal led the conference in rebounding (9.7), blocked shots (2.6) and double-doubles (16) last season earning second team All-SEC and SEC All-Defensive team honors. She also received the Gillom Trophy given to the top women’s basketball player in Mississippi.
“I’m proud of Martha. We appreciate the confidence the voting members have in her ability, and now it’s time for her to go earn it again after earning it last season,” said MSU coach Vic Schaefer in a release from the university. “There’s some responsibility that comes with receiving a preseason award. It’s a prediction, so Martha has to embrace that and live up to the expectations we have for her at Mississippi State. We want her to improve on the numbers she put up last season, because for our team’s success, she has to play well night in and night out.”
The 6-foot-5, native of Worthington, Minn., finished the 2012-13 campaign averaging just shy of a double-double with 12.1 points and 9.7 rebounds. She is also 20 blocks shy of Chanel Mokango’s career record of 180 at the school.
Alwal had a double-double during the Bulldogs 75-44 exhibition win over Shorter Monday night. Alwal shot 6-of-11 from the floor leading the team with 17 points and 13 rebounds in addition to having two blocks.
