STARKVILLE – Mississippi State junior Jake Vickerson went 2-for-3 at the plate and robbed a home run on defense Wednesday night at Dudy Noble Field as Black won, 7-4, vs. Gray in a seven-inning scrimmage. The Bulldogs return to Dudy Noble Friday at 4 p.m. for the program’s 17th intrasquad fall exhibition.
Black jumped ahead quickly with a four-run first, which started when senior Demarcus Henderson walked on four pitches. After an infield single by sophomore Jacob Robson and a sacrifice bunt by junior Seth Heck, Henderson scored on an Alex Detz RBI single to left. Robson then scored on a base knock by redshirt junior Wes Rea. Up 2-0, the home team doubled its lead when Detz and Rea scored separately on throwing miscues by the catcher.
The two teams traded runs in the second when freshman Brent Rooker scored for Gray on a double play ball and Black’s Zach Randolph hooked a first-pitch fastball around the left field foul pole for a solo home run for Black.
Gray plated its second run of the game in the third when senior C.T. Bradford drove in freshman Reid Humphreys on an RBI single.
Leading 5-2 in the fourth, Black tacked on a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth thanks to Vickerson scoring from third on a ball in the dirt and then driving in junior Matthew Britton with a triple the next inning.
Redshirt freshman Daniel Garner lined a two-RBI double to left for the game’s final runs in the top of the sixth.
