Mississippi State finished the 2013 season ranked No. 2 in the country.

The Diamond Dogs will begin this year with the same ranking. Collegiate Baseball gave MSU a No. 2 preseason ranking two points behind Cal. State Fullerton.

“It is a tremendous honor, but at the same time our kids know our goal goes far beyond preseason recognition, said MSU skipper John Cohen. “We are all aware of how much work we have in front of us. I think all of our players and staff will enjoy this recognition for about five minutes, before we zero in on what it is going to take to truly earn a ranking like that.”

It is the Bulldogs highest preseason ranking since being picked No. 1 prior to the 1989 season when Cohen was a junior. That season State went on to win a school-record 54 games and SEC Championship.

The Diamond Dogs return 19 lettermen from a squad that finished 51-20 as the national runner-up to UCLA in the College World Series finals in Omaha, Neb.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
