STARKVILLE – Mississippi State’s pitching staff looked strong in the team’s first intrasquad scrimmage of 2014, resulting in a 1-1 seven-inning tie Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
“It was a pretty competitive game,” head coach John Cohen said. “We have many spots where there is a lot of competition within our ballclub. There were a lot more pros than cons to today.”
Redshirt senior right-hander Ben Bracewell started for the Gray team, striking out one in two innings of work. Opposite of him, Black starter Brandon Woodruff gave up a tough-luck run in a pair of stanzas. Out of the bullpen, preseason All-Americans Jonathan Holder and Ross Mitchell worked a combined 1.2 innings of scoreless relief.
The first run of the game came in the top of the first, when senior Alex Detz reached via a hard-hit single to shortstop, which took a terrible hop on shortstop Matthew Britton. Following a base knock to left field by preseason All-SEC first baseman Wes Rea, Detz scored on a groundout by fellow senior Brett Pirtle.
Black tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, which started with a hit by redshirt junior Zack Randolph. The catcher advanced to second on a Jake Vickerson single and jogged to third on a walk by sophomore outfielder Jacob Robson. With the bases juiced M, senior outfielder Demarcus Henderson was plunked by a pitch for the game-tying RBI.
