STARKVILLE – Starting pitchers Brandon Woodruff and Ben Bracewell combined to strike out eight with zero earned runs allowed in 7 1/3 total innings Friday night at Dudy Noble Field, as Team Black picked up a 2-1 win vs. Team Gray.

All three runs in the seven-inning intrasquad were unearned, with pitching being the story in MSU’s third and final scrimmage of the month. Lefties Ross Mitchell (2.0 IP) and Jacob Lindgren (1.0) joined Woodruff in Team Black’s win, while Bracewell was aided by righty Will Cox (0.2), southpaw Lucas Laster (0.2) and drop-down righty Myles Gentry (1.1).

Last year’s NCAA Starkville Regional MVP Alex Detz (2-for-3) continued his impressive preseason by reaching base three times (2-for-3), while preseason All-SEC first baseman Wes Rea also collected two hits for Black. Sophomore Jacob Robson and junior Matthew Britton both tallied two base knocks in Gray’s losing effort, with Robson’s double to the gap in left being the only extra-base hit of the contest.

Gray took an early lead in the top of the second when redshirt freshman catcher Daniel Garner earned a leadoff walk. After stealing second, Garner advanced to third on a single by Britton, and then tapped the dish on a passed ball.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth, freshman outfielder Joey Swinarski jumpstarted his team’s offense with an infield single. Following a walk by junior outfielder Jake Vickerson, Detz reached on an error to load the bases. A sacrifice fly to deep right field by senior second baseman Brett Pirtle scored Swinarski to tie the game, and with two outs, Rea drove in Vickerson for the game-winning score.

State’ next scrimmage is Saturday at 2:15 p.m. immediately following the annual MSU First Pitch Banquet. Three-time Major League Baseball All-Star pitcher Roy Oswalt will be the guest speaker at the 11:30 a.m. CT event in the Palmeiro Center on campus. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $17.

The Bulldogs begin their 124th season with a 4 p.m. Opening Day lid-lifter against Hofstra at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14.
