STARKVILLE – A pitchers’ duel gave way to clutch hitting Saturday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field, as Gray edged out Black with a 2-1 victory in Mississippi State’s eighth intrasquad scrimmage of the spring.
Gray starting pitcher Trevor Fitts had his best outing of the preseason, yielding no runs on one hit in 4 2/3 innings of work. The right-handed junior struck out five and walked one on 62 pitches. His right-handed counterpart, Preston Brown, gave up no runs on seven hits in four frames. The redshirt sophomore fanned one batter and walked one on 56 pitches.
Preseason All-American Ross Mitchell tossed 1 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen.
Both teams played scoreless ball until the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Kyle Hann (2-for-2) lined a single to left. Following a sacrifice bunt by junior catcher Cody Walker which pushed Hann to scoring position, junior lefty Jacob Lindgren struck out the 10-hole hitter. With a runner on second and two outs, junior outfielder Jake Vickerson (3-for-3) roped a single up the middle, scoring Hann and giving Gray a slim 1-0 lead.
The home team tacked on one more run in the sixth in when preseason All-SEC first baseman Wes Rea scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by redshirt junior catcher Zack Randolph.
Black scored its only run in the seventh when redshirt freshman catcher Daniel Garner scored on a base hit to left by junior infielder Seth Heck.
