After battling the SEC’s top squad to the final minute, Mississippi State hits the road looking for a win at Auburn on Sunday.

Tip-off at Auburn Arena is set for 2 p.m. Fans can listen to the game in the Golden Triangle and surrounding areas on WKBB-FM 100.9 and in Tupelo on WXWX-FM 96.3.

The Bulldogs enter the matchup 16-8 overall and 3-7 mark in SEC play. MSU fought No. 6 South Carolina valiantly Thursday, but fell just short in a 71-64 defeat. Jerica James paced Vic Schaefer‘s squad with 11 points, while Savannah Carter and Martha Alwal added 10 points apiece.

Sunday’s meeting will be the second of the season between the two teams, as Mississippi State was unable to hold on to a 13-point first-half lead in an 82-74 setback at the Hump Jan. 5.

The Tigers have won the last two meetings after State claimed the previous three contests. The teams have split the first two meetings played inside Auburn Arena.

Alwal, who scored 18 points in the first meeting with Auburn, leads Mississippi State with 15.2 points per game and is fifth in the conference with 8.4 rebounds an outing. Kendra Grant (11.6 points) and Dominique Dillingham (10.0) also average double figures in the scoring column.

Auburn (12-10, 3-6) is winless on its home court in SEC games so far this season. The Tigers claimed a 56-48 road win at Arkansas last Sunday.

Tyrese Tanner paces AU and is sixth in the league with 16.0 points a game. The senior scored 24 points in the season’s first meeting.

Defense could tell the story of Sunday’s game, as both teams block more than four shots per game. Both squads are also near the top of the league in creating turnovers, as the Bulldogs are second with 10.5 steals a game and the Tigers are fourth with 10.0.

Following Sunday’s road matchup, Mississippi State returns home the following Sunday when it hosts Vanderbilt. Tip-off at Humphrey Coliseum is set for 1 p.m. on SEC-TV.

I have covered Mississippi State in some capacity since 2004 and joined the Daily Journal staff in 2013. I enjoy short walks on the beach, performing concerts in my car and watching professional wrestling.
