My practice notes are not nearly as expansive as on Day 1 but of course there was a lot to take in with position changes, guys recovering from injuries, etc…

Practice was again in shells and shorts.

I noticed during the defensive specialty drills that the coaches were working with different units than their traditional group at times. For instance, cornerbacks coach Deshea Townsend was working with the defensive linemen at one station with the position groups rotating every few minutes.

Sophomore tight end Artimas Samuel continues to impress me with his hands. He was a high school wide receiver that has really bulked up since those days and is massive now. But even with the size and strength he’s added, he still retained those soft hands.

Sophomore wide receiver De’Runnya Wilson had another strong day and continues to catch anything in the vicinity of him. Wilson made a diving catch to snag one of Nick Fitzgerald’s passes during the skeleton drill and later used his basketball hops to make a leaping grab on one of Fitzgerald’s balls.

Sophomore defensive tackle Chris Jones looks a lot more trim this spring and seems to have dropped  a few pounds during the offseason. The roster has him listed at an even 300-pounds but I wouldn’t be surprised if he wasn’t in the low 290’s right now.

Walk-on kickers Evan Sobiesk and Westin Graves had a much better day on field goals today.

During the pass skeleton drill, junior cornerback Taveze Calhoun nabbed a pick-six off sophomore quarterback Damian Williams.

Sophomore linebacker Beniquez Brown intercepted junior quarterback Dak Prescott in the same drill.

Senior safety Justin Cox broke up a Williams pass.

Williams connected with sophomore wide receiver Javous Nicks for a long gainer down the left sideline.

During the scrimmage portion of practice, sophomore defensive tackles Nelson Adams and Nick James, redshirt freshman linebacker Dezmond Harris and sophomore defensive end Torrey Dale all had sacks. In fact, Dale stuffed a play in the backfield and then notched a sack on back-to-back plays.

Fitzgerald had a great run straight up the gut on a quarterback draw. The defense bought the fake leaving the middle of the field wide open and he was able to move the chains on the designed run.

Junior linebacker Zach Jackson had a tackle for loss reading the option correctly and probably would have lit up the ball carrier had everything been live. Williams optioned out around left end and tossed to senior running back Nick Griffin at the last second but Jackson was right there waiting and made the play almost immediately after Griffin secured the ball.

The Bulldogs will return to the practice fields Friday at 3:15 p.m.
